One really effective way to use Twitter is to link to your website, a blog article etc. But we can say, hand on heart, we have NEVER clicked through on a Tweet that simply contains nothing but a link. Apart from the obvious ‘it could be malicious’ angle, why on earth would anyone click though just because it’s there.
Tempt us, tell us WHY we should click through, tell us a little bit about what we’ll find when we get there, and you’ve got us, agog, irresistibly drawn to click through. It ain’t, as the old joke goes, rocket salad. Give us a reason to click!
(By the way we know that, often, links without text are the result of some automated process or other – our particular bugbear, as it happens! For example, cross-posting between Twitter and Facebook is something we strongly advocate against – here’s why. And don’t even get us started on automated direct messages on Twitter – we believe in keeping it real, keeping it personal. It seems to us that in this digital social media world the personal touch is more important than ever.)
